I am a beginner and I was wondering how easy it would be to join this late in the semester? Also, how many classes would I have to attend in order to avoid skipping material and learning things in a continuous progression?

    Thanks.

  2. umnaikido Says:

    Hi Kevin,

You can join our club at any time. Many of the senior members will help familiarize you with some of our etiquette and procedures before class and we all work together to help newer members learn our art.

In order to continuously progress in Aikido we recommend that you attend as many classes as you are able. We understand that from time to time students are busy and cannot make it to one or more classes and just ask that you let us know if you are planning to miss a large amount of class. Also, we do not start at one point and end at another each semester, which is why joining at any time works fine. Everyone in the class works on the same techniques no matter what your skill level. We hope to see you on the mat!

    Hello!

I am currently studying abroad in Japan and I will be back to the U for summer term; when do you think you will post summer practice times? I am eager to continue Aikido when I get back.

    Thank you very much!

  4. umnaikido Says:

    Hi Tori!

Our summer practice schedule will likely be very similar to what we have now, assuming that there are no conflicts with the Armory. Our times have generally stayed the same, whereas in the past the days have changed.

As soon as we find out practice times for the summer we will post them. We are also planning a seminar for this summer along with Aikido of Minnesota.

We look forward to seeing you in the summer!

    Hello!
I wanted to join the dojo for the month of July.
    How can I join?
    Thank you.
    Regards,
    Avantika

  7. umnaikido Says:

    Hi Avantika!

If you are still interested in joining, you simply need to show up, sign a participation waiver and pay dues. Your first few practices are free should you decide not to join.

    Hi
Yes, I am still interested. When I can I come in the Fall session? I want to start asap :-)
Also, where can I purchase my Gi?
    Thanks!

  9. umnaikido Says:

    Hi Avantika!
You can join any time. THe Aikido Club practices regularly year round. Our schedule right now is Tues and THurs. 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm at the Armory (right near the U Rec Center) as well as Saturday @ 10:00 am.

We hope to see you at practice soon!

  10. umnaikido Says:

    Dear Avantika:
You don’t need to have a gi right away to practice. Just wear some comfortable workout clothes (long sleeves and pants are best). If you do want to buy a gi, you can get one locally at Rising Sun (2058 Marshall Ave, St Paul, MN 55104). There are several good resources online including e-bogu.com, bujindesign.com, and karate-mart.com. If you need advice, ask one of the other students in class and we can help you out.

  12. Nikhil Says:

I miss Aikido! Used to practice back in upstate NY and moved here last August. I did drop by a couple of classes and liked Patrick Sensei’s style (signed the forms too), but I ended up taking a class with a schedule conflict and could not resume practice :/

Will there be any classes this summer? I’d still like to be a member. In all probability, I will end up taking a class with the Tuesday-Thursday evening schedule this coming Fall as well.

    Thanks in advance!
    Nikhil
